Can you do a Madrid TEFL course? Of course you caňa!
There's so much to do in Madrid, including sitting comfortably in the plazas watching the sun descend. Para mi, being a TEFL graduate for only a few months, the events leading up to the night's fun in the best part. The bookends of the night are caňas and tapas. Introducing: ‘caňas and tapas’. This mix can of course be indulged in at any time…
The best bites to eat I have had in Madrid have accompanied caňas. Caňas are small, being served in a mini glass, and are the perfect coupling with a idle Sunday afternoon. Either way, great tapas is always involved.
I first sampled caňas and tapas in an area of Madrid called Plaza de Espana. Expect to stand, which is honestly not that bad. standing up at the bar is useful…for ordering beer for one thing. The staff were really helpful and funny and always ready to offer recommendations. The starter dish they bring is fried chip potatoes served with a delightful oily, garlic sauce. With these potatoes came three chorizo sausages. My Spanish buddy and myself are excited to begin. This garlic sauce is one that should be experienced with friends, not first dates. It was gorgeous. The chorizo was the best, dissolving in my mouth and made me want more! Another caňa, another tapa. Next up was baby squid in a rich, divine tomato salsa. Fondly remembering the day I decided to come to Madrid, we ate the squid eagerly and chugged the beer. More caňas and ergo more tapas. Next we were presented with a round of salami that was perfecto on every level.
Plaza de Espana really is great for tapas bars. It has a lot of side streets that all have a plethora of individual bars. Be aware that the closer you walk towards Gran Via, the more the prices increase. Plaza de Espana is a really effective combination of old Madrid and modern day Spain. For 3 caňas each and therefore 3 plates of tapas with our drinks, the bill came to a heroic €7. Why didn’t we stay for more you may ask? Too many other bars to explore!
However I could not stay out any later I had to get back and work. When I get home after a rather giddy metro ride I pull out my folders and put my TEFL knowledge into good use. Filled up on beers and delicious morsels, I find this is quite easy. Another exciting night! Bring on the next time I go out in Madrid!
