A Guide To The Isle Of Mull - Argyll And Bute
The Isle of Mull - Argyll and Bute is often referred to as Mull. This island is the second biggest island within the area that is known as the Inner Hebrides. This island is off the western coast of Scotland and it is within the area that controlled by Argyll and Bute council.
Mull covers an area of 380 square miles and its the fourth biggest island within Scotland and its also the fourth biggest island that surrounds the United Kingdom. Mull has a population of 2667.
During the summer months in Mull the population grows a lot due to the vast amounts of tourists that visit the isle of Mull. A lot of the residential population on the island live within Tobermory and the town is home to 700 people. There is only one burgh on the island and this is Tobermory, this has been a burgh since 1973. Tobermory is the location for the only whisky distillery on the island.
There is a strong network for education on the island and this consists of several primary schools and one secondary school. The secondary school is in Tobermory. The children that live in the southern and western part of the Island attend secondary school in Oban and they live there between Monday and Thursday.
Mull has a coast line that stretches over 300 miles and the island enjoys a moderate climate that is assisted by what is known as the Gulf Stream. There is a lot of beautiful scenery on the isle and this is set against a mountainous back drop. The biggest mountain on Mull is Ben More and its peak is 966 meters in height. There are a range of peninsulas on the island and this is mostly moorland.
The peninsula that is known as Aros is located in the northern part of the Island and this includes Tobermory and some smaller settlements that includes Salen and Calgary. The peninsula that is known as Ross of Mulls is situated in the south western part of the Island and includes Fionnphort and Bunessan. The south eastern part of the island is home to Craignure, Lochbuie and Lochdon, which are all villages.
There is a lot of island that lies on the western side of Mull and this includes Ulva, Iona and Erraid. There is some small islands which are uninhabited and this includes Gometra, Staffa and also Eorsa. Staffa is well known for being the location of Fingals Cave. The area that is known as Calve Island is a small uninhabited island which is situated within Tobermory Bay. Looking from south western coast of Mull it is possible to see two outlying lighthouse which are based on rocks and these are called Dubh Artach and also Skerryvore.
